Reddit RSS and API Shutdown: What Breaks for Keyword Alerts
By Sayan De · · 9 min read

Last checked October 15, 2026, against Reddit's announcements in r/redditdev and r/modnews, and TechCrunch's and PPC Land's reporting.
Do you get an email or Slack ping when someone on Reddit mentions your product or a competitor? Check how that alert is built this week. Reddit is turning off RSS feeds on November 13, 2026 (r/modnews). In Reddit's words: "If you use RSS for feeds outside of a community you moderate, there is no replacement" (TechCrunch, September 30, 2026).
RSS is only the first step. Reddit is also closing its free public Data API (the public API) in stages through March 2027. Many cheap keyword alerts, home-made scripts and small listening tools run on one of those two pipes.
The short version
- Reddit ends RSS feeds on November 13, 2026. Alerts built on Reddit RSS stop that day, with no official replacement outside moderation.
- The public API closes in stages. New access requests stop after October 31, 2026. Apps that haven't registered or answered Reddit's outreach start losing access on January 12, 2027. Public access ends in March 2027.
- Apps moved to Reddit's Developer Platform, and tools with a Reddit data agreement, are positioned to keep working. Everything else needs a plan.
- This week, list every Reddit alert you rely on. Then ask each vendor, in writing, how it will get Reddit data after March 2027.
What Reddit announced on September 30, 2026
Reddit is ending RSS support on November 13, 2026 (r/modnews) and phasing out the public API through March 2027 (r/redditdev). It calls RSS a "common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse" (TechCrunch).
The announcement came as posts to moderators and developers, and it had four parts:
- RSS feeds end. Moderators who use RSS for alerts are pointed to a Developer Platform app called Discord Relay. Everyone else gets no replacement (TechCrunch).
- The public API moves to the Developer Platform. Apps that want to keep running must register and move onto Reddit's Developer Platform, also called Devvit. Code there runs on Reddit's servers, and Reddit controls which APIs are available. Moving an existing app means porting or rewriting how it works for that platform, and compatibility or feature gaps may need extra work. More than 14,000 apps and bots have already registered to move (PPC Land).
- A migration fund. Reddit set aside $1 million and pays $1,000 to each eligible app that completes the move. Registration for that program closes November 30, 2026 (r/redditdev, PPC Land).
- Old Reddit narrows. Old Reddit will be limited to logged-in moderators and to users who have used it in the past six months (TechCrunch).
The deadlines that matter
Each of these dates can switch off a different kind of Reddit alert. Put them in your calendar now.
| Date | What happens | Who it hits | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 31, 2026 | Reddit stops accepting new requests for public API access | Anyone who planned to start a script or tool on the API | r/redditdev |
| Nov 13, 2026 | RSS feeds stop working | RSS readers, RSS-based alerts and automations | r/modnews |
| Nov 30, 2026 | Registration closes for the $1,000 migration program | Developers moving apps to the Developer Platform | r/redditdev |
| Jan 12, 2027 | Reddit starts closing API access for apps and users that haven't registered or responded to its outreach | Personal scripts and small tools that never registered | r/redditdev |
| March 2027 | Public API access closes for everyone left | Anything still on the public API | r/redditdev |

What breaks for keyword alerts and social listening
Alerts built on RSS stop on November 13. Alerts built on the public API are at risk from January 12 and end by March 2027. TechCrunch lists social listening tools, research tools and AI products among the affected uses. It adds that AI assistants will need commercial deals to keep getting Reddit data (TechCrunch).
The common setups line up against the announced dates like this. "Ask the vendor" means the answer depends on how that tool gets its data, which only the vendor can confirm.
| How you watch Reddit | After Nov 13, 2026 | After March 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| An RSS reader following a subreddit or search feed | Stops | Stops |
| A Zapier, IFTTT or Make recipe triggered by a Reddit RSS feed | Stops | Stops |
| Your own script on the public API (for example with PRAW) | Works | Stops unless moved to the Developer Platform or covered by an agreement. Register before Jan 12 |
| A free keyword-alert service | Ask the vendor | Ask the vendor |
| A paid listening tool | Ask the vendor | Works only if the vendor holds a Reddit data agreement that covers your use |
| Reading and searching Reddit yourself, logged in | Works | Works |
Nothing in the announcement stops a person from reading Reddit. What ends is cheap, unlicensed, automated access to it. If you use Reddit to find leads, your reading habits survive this change even if your alerts don't.
Why Reddit is doing this
Reddit's stated reason is scraping and automated abuse. Our read of the commercial reason: Reddit's conversations have become a product it sells.
Reuters reported in February 2024 that Reddit licensed its content to Google for AI training. Its sources put the deal at about $60 million a year (Engadget). Reddit's non-advertising "other revenue" grew 24% year over year to $43 million in the second quarter of 2026 (TechCrunch). Free RSS and free API access give away the same data that licensing sells.
Small tools have hit this wall before. GummySearch, a Reddit audience-research tool, shut down on November 30, 2025. It said it was closing "to comply with Reddit's API policies, which forbid commercial applications" (GummySearch).
If your pipeline depends on access Reddit hasn't agreed to, plan for it to end.
What to do before each deadline
Work through these in order. For a handful of alerts, the first two steps are short.
This week: list every Reddit alert you rely on
Write down each alert, script and tool that touches Reddit. For each one, note how it gets data: RSS, the API, or a vendor. If you don't know, check the setup screen of your automation tool or your script's code. Anything with .rss in its URL, such as a search.rss?q= feed, is on the RSS path.
Before October 31: request API access if you need it
If you run your own script and still need API access, get your request in now. Reddit stops taking new requests after October 31 (r/redditdev). If you already have access, register your app with Reddit. Registration is for existing apps and is separate from migrating them to the Developer Platform. Migrating later means porting or rewriting the app for that platform, so check that your use is supported before you commit to it.
Before November 13: replace RSS alerts and ask your vendors
Turn off or replace every RSS-based alert, so you don't mistake silence for "no mentions". Then email each listening vendor two questions:
- Do you hold a current data agreement with Reddit?
- Does it cover how I use the data, including exports and feeding results into AI tools?
Ask for the answer in writing. A vendor having some Reddit agreement doesn't prove that every use you make of the data is covered.
Before January 12, 2027: register what you keep
Register any app or script you plan to keep running. Apps and users that haven't registered or responded to Reddit's outreach start losing access on that date (r/redditdev).
Before your next renewal: get notice in the contract
When a listening tool's renewal comes up, ask the vendor to commit to telling you if it loses access to a source you pay for. That turns a silent coverage gap into a dated notice.
How to keep finding buyers on Reddit after March 2027
This section is our opinion, not part of Reddit's announcement.
Expect fewer, more expensive automated alerts. The work shifts toward reading a short list of subreddits well, rather than watching all of Reddit badly.
- Keep a short list. Pick the five to ten subreddits where your buyers ask for recommendations, and check them directly.
- Use Reddit's own search. Search for your problem phrases and competitor names, sorted by new.
- Pay for volume only from licensed tools. If you need wide coverage, buy it from a vendor that can show a Reddit agreement.
- Spend the saved time on the reply. Finding a thread was never the hard part. Winning the customer takes a reply that helps, follows the subreddit's rules and doesn't read like an ad.
Our guide to finding leads on Reddit covers that last part. For how replies are drafted and posted on Reddit, see how Reddit replies work.
Frequently asked questions
When does Reddit stop RSS feeds?
On November 13, 2026 (r/modnews). Reddit says there's no replacement for RSS feeds used outside a community you moderate (TechCrunch).
Is the Reddit API shutting down completely?
The public API is. New access requests stop after October 31, 2026, and apps that haven't registered or responded to Reddit's outreach start losing access on January 12, 2027. Public access closes in March 2027 (r/redditdev). Apps that move to Reddit's Developer Platform are positioned to keep running there. Data users such as AI assistants will need commercial deals (TechCrunch, PPC Land).
Will my Reddit keyword alert tool still work?
It depends on how the tool gets Reddit data. Tools built on RSS stop on November 13. Tools on the public API stop by March 2027, unless they move to the Developer Platform or sign an agreement. Ask your vendor, in writing, which path it uses.
What replaces Reddit RSS?
For moderators, Reddit recommends moving alerts to the Discord Relay app on its Developer Platform. For everyone else, Reddit says there is no replacement (TechCrunch).
The bottom line
- RSS-based Reddit alerts stop on November 13, 2026.
- Public API access ends by March 2027, and apps must register before January 12 to keep a path forward.
- Only apps moved to the Developer Platform, or tools with a Reddit agreement, are positioned to keep running. Get your vendor's answer in writing.
Start with the list. An hour this week saves you from discovering in December that your alerts went quiet a month ago.
